Here’s What to Look for in Oregon Sports Betting Sites

The US online gambling industry has come a long way. Today, there are a huge number of amazing online sportsbooks available throughout the country. Some of these websites are known to be better than others.

Finding the perfect site for online sports betting in Oregon for you should be easy. You just need to know what to look for! Below are four of the most important features that all Oregon sports betting sites should offer.

Safe and Easy-to-Use Payment System

In our opinion, the first feature of a gambling website that you should look into is its payment system. In case you’re unaware, a payment system processes your deposits and withdrawals. Today, online sportsbooks in OR should provide easy, safe payment options for all of their members.

There are a number of ways you can look into a website’s payment system. One great way is to check out these websites for yourself! All reputable sports betting sites in Oregon will list the details of their payment system. They should provide information on what forms of payment are accepted, what fees are attached to deposits and withdrawals, and how long payouts take.

You can also head over to our betting site reviews page. Here, we go over the details of different online sportsbooks. We discuss the pros and cons of each online gambling site and report of anything shady we might encounter.

The best Oregon sports betting sites allow you to make deposits with major debit cards. Generally speaking, these websites only accept Bitcoin as a payout method. Spend a little time looking at different websites’ payment methods. You’ll want to know that your money is secure.

Great Customer Support Options

Individuals who are new to online sports gambling fail to realize how important a website’s customer service system is. Oregon is currently in the process of launching a state-run sports betting website. Lawmakers here do not regulate the popular online sportsbooks that are based in other countries.

If you encounter an issue while gambling online, you’ll need to rely on the website that you play through to resolve any issues. It’s extremely important to only play through sites that provide you with quick, direct online support 24/7.

In our opinion, the best Oregon sports betting sites offer you a live chat feature. It allows you to speak with a website representative directly. Some of the less reputable online sportsbooks only provide email support. Generally speaking, email support will take days or even weeks to answer your questions. Find an internet sportsbook that’s available to help you out all day, every day!

Modern Design

We feel that website design is extremely important. It affects your entire gambling experience. When looking for sports betting sites in Oregon to join, we recommend that you look at a few different designs to see which ones you enjoy.

Everyone has a different design preference. There are some that love simplistic websites, offering a limited set of odds on just a few sports. Others love complex sports betting websites that allow you to make a huge range of different wagers every single day.

As long as the design fits your gambling needs, it’s probably good for you! Head back up to the top of this page and look at the Oregon sports betting sites we recommend. Each one has a great design that makes it extremely easy to find the odds that you’re looking for.

Betting Odds for the Sports You Want to Bet On

Speaking of odds, it’s important to make sure that the sports betting sites in Oregon that you’re interested in joining actually provide odds on the sports that you want to bet on! You might be surprised to find out how many people completely overlook this. Fortunately, it’s extremely easy to see which odds are available online.

Most Oregon sports betting websites will list their available odds directly on the site homepage. These sportsbooks usually feature odds for major sports such as the NFL, MLB, and NBA toward the top of the page. Unique odds on small sporting events should be easy to find, too.

Online Sports Betting Oregon

Several of the top Oregon sports betting sites available today also offer fun novelty betting options. This allows players to make bets on random things like politics and events like the oscars.

By now, you’re probably ready to start placing some bets! Before you do, let’s look at why online sportsbooks in OR have grown so popular lately.

Why Are Sports Betting Sites in Oregon so Popular Right Now?

Sports

Sports betting has never been more popular in the US than it is right now. Much of this is due to the US Supreme Court striking down PASPA back in May of 2018. Previously, only Nevada was legally allowed to offer sports betting.

With PASPA now gone, every state in the US can set laws on the sports gambling industry. Many states have now fully regulated their sports betting markets. More are set to legalize this industry over the next few years.

Further down this page, we’re going to discuss the specific legality of sports betting in Oregon.

Our team wanted to know exactly why Oregon sports betting sites are growing so popular. We asked several online gamblers their reasons for making sports bets over the internet. Interestingly, there were two responses that we continued to hear.

It’s the Most Convenient Option Available

Oregon is a fairly large state. Unfortunately, there are very few legal options to make sports wagers here. On August 27th, the first land-based sportsbook in Oregon began operating in Lincoln City. As you might expect, most individuals prefer to simply make their sports bets from home.

Sports betting sites in Oregon allow you to place wagers on your favorite teams and players from anywhere with an internet connection. Most of these websites also allow you to bet using a mobile device, too. There’s no doubt that online betting is the most convenient option available right now.

There Are More Odds Available Online

It’s well-known that online gambling sites provide even more gambling options than the top land-based sportsbooks in the country. There are simply more ways to offer odds online than there are at sportsbooks inside casinos. The best Oregon sports betting sites offer their players thousands of different betting odds every single day.

As we mentioned earlier, this applies to more than just sports. If you want to place a wide range of betting odds, online betting might be the best option for you.

Are Online Sportsbooks in Oregon Actually Lawful?

Oregon has a complex set of gambling laws. Fortunately, lawmakers in this state have begun to embrace the sports betting industry. A sports betting bill was presented here in 2019 and was passed several months later.

As we just mentioned, the first land-based sportsbook is opening up here at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City. Over the next few years, more sportsbooks are set to open in the state’s other tribal casinos. There’s also a regulated online sportsbook on its way.

Lawmakers have officially approved an Oregon state-run online gambling site. Hope was that it would be ready by the start of the 2019/2020 NFL season.

The legality of foreign online sports betting sites is a little confusing. Oregon is one of the few states that states it’s illegal for gambling websites to accept payments from Oregonian players. These websites are based in other countries, making it extremely difficult for the state government to fine them.

Oregon’s State Statutes defines gambling as follows:

“Gambling means that a person stakes or risks something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance or a future contingent event not under the control or influence of the person, upon an agreement or understanding that the person or someone else will receive something of value in the event of a certain outcome.”

Section 167-109 of the State Statutes sheds some light on the legality of online gambling.

“A person engaged in an Internet gambling business may not knowingly accept, in connection with the participation of another person in unlawful gambling using the Internet.”

Based on what’s being said, it’s illegal for gambling operators to accept money from OR residents. The specific legality of making wagers through these Oregon sports betting sites lies in a gray area. The state-regulated gambling website will become available here in the near future.

Will I Be Prosecuted for Playing at Sports Betting Sites in Oregon?

It’s highly unlikely. Our team has not come across a single case of any individual facing legal trouble for making sports bets through Oregon sports betting sites that are based overseas.

How Can I Stay Safe Playing at OR Online Sportsbooks?

Many people who are first getting into online sports betting in Oregon are a little concerned about staying safe. This is completely normal! Today, staying safe while playing at sports betting sites in Oregon is easier than ever before.

Our team has come up with a few easy tips to follow while gambling online. As long as you keep these tips in mind, there’s a very good chance that your online gambling experience will be nothing but fun.

Only Make Bets Through Reputable Websites

This is without a doubt the easiest way for you to protect yourself while online gambling in Oregon. Reputable gambling sites will work hard to ensure that your money is safe. Before joining any Oregon sports betting sites, make sure that it offers you the features we listed above!

Don’t Be Afraid to Switch to a New Gambling Website

Hopefully, the very first online sportsbook that you join is perfect. If, however, you join a gambling site that doesn’t fit your needs, be willing to move to another one! There are too many great internet sportsbooks to settle for one that doesn’t provide what you’re looking for.

Understand How Promotions Work

Have you already checked out a few Oregon sports betting sites? If so, there’s a great chance that a promotion has been thrown your way. Promotions are bonuses that gambling sites offer to their members. These can be a great way to boost your spending money, yet they can sometimes make it difficult for you to withdraw your winnings. Spend a little time understanding how promotions work. It will help you decide whether or not you want to use them!

Don’t Bet More Money Than You Can Afford to Lose

It’s extremely easy to get carried away with your spending when playing at sports betting sites in Oregon. Betting on sports is just so fun! We highly recommend that you track exactly how much you are actually wagering, though. If you realize that your spending habits are getting out of hand, take a break for a little while!

Bet on Sports That You Know About

One of the easiest ways to lose money while gambling online is betting on things that you know nothing about. We highly recommend that you place bets on sports that you understand. If you’re a hardcore NFL fan, bet on football! If you love MMA, place wagers on the UFC and Bellator. Your chances of winning at Oregon sports betting sites will always be greater when you wager on things you know about.

Good luck making your bets!

The path Oregon follows as a state often mirrors that of its neighbor to the north – Washington. The Pacific Northwest states share a similar ethos – laid-back and free. With regard to gambling, Oregon’s laws and acceptance have grown in a rather organic way – moving from low-key social games to the situation today.

With that being said, it joined the list of states with legal, regulated Oregon sports betting on August 27.

Social casino options

Social casino options in Oregon are typical. Slotomania, Double Down Casino, Big Fish, and Zynga are available through Facebook and mobile devices to residents and visitors. Unfortunately, none of the tribal casino properties in the state offer any kind of mobile or social gaming tied to their properties or affiliated with a larger site.

Oregonians can also participate in MyVegas. This is MGM’s free comps app that players can use to generate loyalty points. These can then be redeemed for actual comps at participating properties. None of the redeeming properties are particularly close to Oregon. It does, however, remain an option for those who want to make the two-hour flight or 15-hour drive to Las Vegas.

Online gambling

Oregon’s stance on online gambling mirrors that of many states. There are no specific prohibitions against playing over the internet. However, it is illegal for the operators themselves to accept wagers. Therefore, gambling on the internet in Oregon is the same legally hazy proposition it is in many states. Therefore, it is not recommended. The only exception to this rule is betting on horse racing, which is allowed online in Oregon.

At this point, there doesn’t seem to be any movement in the legislature toward legalizing any kind of wagering beyond the pari-mutuel exception. Furthermore, the recent rejection of placing commercial casinos in the state does not bode well for the development of online options.

However, there is some variation in the pari-mutuel offerings. Games like Racing Roulette and 1 2 3 Pick N Pools suggest a possible route for online development, akin to allowing gambling to occur under the heading of lottery in other states.

The Oregon Lottery and sports betting

The mobile app for the Oregon Lottery went live on Sept. 11, 2018, and is available for purchase for both Android and iOS users.

The app has decent features–users can check if they won or lost on various games including scratch-offs, draw games and Keno.

Lane-based sports betting kicked off on Aug. 27, 2019, at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City. Owned and operated by the Siletz Tribe, the facility offers retail wageringonly on professional and collegiate sports.

Oregon is the 12th state with legal, regulated sports betting.

Lottery officials are in the process of programming their lottery app to work with online sports betting service Scoreboard. However, they did not hit their target date of NFL season kickoff, and the launch is delayed so that the app launches in a fully functional state rather than rushed. The Oregon Lottery is still awaiting authorization from payment processors, and it aims to roll out the betting app in October.

Additionally, betting on college sports will be prohibited.

State casino operator history

Online Sports Betting Oregon

Oregon’s first foray into gambling began, as it does in many states, with racing – both horses and dogs. Greyhounds raced at Multnomah Stadium from 1933 to 2004. Races were then discontinued due to lack of interest. However, both live horse racing and OTB options continue in the state.

One of the state’s major gambling offerings began humbly in 1973. The legislature permitted the introduction of licensed poker clubs. The caveat was that no rake could be collected from the pots by the house. As long as the individual localities passed ordinances to allow them within their area, the businesses could open and serve Oregonians. Roughly 15 of these establishments operate in Oregon today. The clubs operate under controversy, in no small part due to their main source of competition.

The primary venues for gambling in Oregon are its nine tribal casinos. Since the passage of the Indian Regulatory Gaming Act of 1988, federally recognized tribes have been able to negotiate compacts with their resident states to allow the construction and operation of various casino properties. The Pacific Northwest is home to many tribes. In fact, neighboring Washington’s largest city, Seattle, is named after one of the tribal chiefs who inhabited the area. Unsurprisingly, many Oregon tribes were able to negotiate with the state.

The number of casinos in Oregon has stayed at or near nine since the IGRA was passed. Other tribes (like the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs) have had casinos in the past, but some have closed and others have taken their place.

Land-based casino options in Oregon

The result is the nine casinos that operate today. Almost every casino is operated by a separate tribe. The one exception is the Three Rivers casinos in Florence and Coos Bay. These are owned by the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians of Oregon. These casinos are able to offer almost any type of gambling to patrons. However, the slot machines are technically video lottery terminals. These are almost indistinguishable from actual slot machines, but they pool their proceeds in a manner specific to the state lottery and are thus considered legal extensions of that offering.

Oregon Scoreboard

The biggest hurdle for all tribal casinos in Oregon is geographic in nature. Oregon’s largest city, Portland, is in the extreme northern part of the state. It is located far from any Oregon reservation lands. This means Portland residents are less inclined to frequent these establishments. The nearest Oregon casino to Portland is Chinook Winds, which is over two hours away.

Land-based casino options in nearby Washington

This problem is exacerbated by the fact that Portland also sits near the Columbia River, which is Oregon’s border with Washington. As such, the nearest casino to Portland is actually The Last Frontier Casino in La Center, Washington. It’s a mere 26 miles from the city center. Even UBET, another Washington casino, is only an hour away from Oregon’s most populated area.

So far, attempts to build off-reservation casinos in Oregon have failed. Currently, no tribe or entity is pursuing the matter. The last group that did, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, abandoned its efforts to build a resort in the Columbia River Gorge in 2013. However, Portlanders are not suffering from a lack of options for scratching their itch. Remember, legal poker clubs are alive and well in the city, and two casinos are less than an hour away.
